Repuked: Up from the sewers

Sweden’s Repuked came to my attention a couple of years ago thanks to this song and their debut album “Pervertopia” was a solid and fun collection of old school death metal worship. 2013 sees the band release the follow up and “Up from the sewers” is more of the same but with better songs and a dirtier sound.

The title song kicks things off with a pretty cool melody and the song veers between fast old school death metal and slower more ominous riffs. It’s a pretty good start to the album and sets the stage nicely. “Enter gilthdome” is a nasty piece of work as it crashes through the speakers and then alternates between a dirty mid-paced riff and some really aggressive riffing. “Fuck you fucking whore” has a punk energy to it that’s mixed up with some swirling mid paced death metal and is, for want of a better word, catchy. Elsewhere on the album “Hobo holocaust” is a pretty kickass song with a solid groove in the middle. “Day of depravity” is a synth based instrumental that sounds like something John Carpenter would have written in the 80s and it works quite well in adding some variety. Album closer “Porcelain deathgod” has a late 90s Entombed swagger to its riffs and makes for a pretty good end to the album.

Most songs on “Up from the sewers” follow the same formula where fast riffy sections alternate with slower; more mid paced death metal parts but there are enough good riffs and melodies here to keep me interested. This is for the most part, old school American death metal with some Entombed thrown in and a punk attitude. The sound overall is dirty and pretty bare bones with chief vocalist Rob the Slob’s guttural approach working well. Guitarists Nicke Piss and Richard Rimjob do a good job with the backing vocals giving the Slob some solid support. The riffs are usually catchy but where the album feels a bit weak is in the sound. The production on this, while being quite old school and kvlt is also a bit thin. The lack of a heavy bottom end really shows in the slower sections of the songs and the bass can only be heard occasionally on the album.

All told, “Up from the sewers” is a solid follow up to a pretty good debut. There’s no reinventing of the wheel and if you can’t get enough of old school death metal worship then this is an enjoyable collection of songs.
